The thrust focuses on effects, materials, and systems that mediate the interaction between photons or allow the conversion of signals between the photonics and electronic planes. On the materials front, activities range from individual organic molecules and organic thin films, to wide bandgap semiconductors, to two-dimensional layered materials and self-assembled nanostructures. Collaborative activities within the thrust are vertically integrated and employ a (meta-)materials-by-design approach where the structure is rationally developed towards desired functionalities such as all-optical data processing, photovoltaics, or light emitting materials. This is supported by investigative capabilities in nonlinear optics, laser spectroscopy, microscopy, and scanning probing techniques.
