A societal shift to renewable, clean energy sources, requires that we develop the technologies necessary to efficiently harness and utilize this energy across all industries. Earth abundant sources of C, N, O, and H are found in small molecules that typically require high temperatures and/or pressures to activate and convert them to desired products. The foundational theme of this group’s work is to replace the traditional energy intensive thermal and chemical driving forces in these processes with renewable electrochemical an/or photochemical energy. This concept additionally enables modular deployment of these technologies for point of use production, alleviating the requirements for large scale distribution and storage of renewable energy.
