Jeff Shakespeare is currently a Collaborating Academic Visitor at Lehigh University doing research in Raman virus detection for rapid pandemic response. He is also working with the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Department on a new, high efficiency, ultralight Stirling engine for drone and electric vehicle battery recharge.

Dr. Shakespeare is recently retired from Infinera Corporation where he did optical package development and manufacturing of opto-electronic transceivers for the fiber optic communications network. His previous experience includes development of a patented, all solid-state acoustic fiber optic interrogator for pipeline leak detection using a lithium niobate phase modulator for Hifi Engineering, a pipeline monitoring company in Alberta, Canada. As VP of Manufacturing for ACAMP, a Canadian technology incubator, he developed optical solutions for new startup companies. With over fifty years of experience in mechanical engineering, opto-electronics and consumer product development, including 20 years at Bell Laboratories, Dr. Shakespeare developed and taught Microsystems Packaging, a graduate level course in the Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering Departments at Lehigh. He was co-founder of three startup companies at Ben Franklin Technology Partners and holds 40 U.S. patents. He received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 1979.
